This is coming from a photojournalist you cant see the stars because they are being lost in the amount of light from the sun and the reflection off the moons surface. It is contrasty as hell up there. The same result can be seen in any major city that is

The real answer - without any atmosphere there isn't any filtering of light on the moon so all of the suns rays are hitting it...flooding out the dim light of the stars...has your dumbass ever looked at the stars in the city...then out in the countryside?
